OUR PHILOSOPHY
What do you hope for your child?
“To be happy, and healthy.”
Every parent starts with this simple hope. Yet, in the name of giving them our best, we often tell them, “Hurry up!”, sacrificing the presence we long to give them for the performance we fear they need.
Every parent we meet arrives with one of two worries.
Some worry that a play-based preschool won't be academic enough, that their child will fall behind in Singapore's system.
Others worry the opposite: that "play-based" here is just a label, and underneath it is the same hurried, worksheet-driven preschool they were hoping to avoid.
Both worries deserve a straight answer. So here's exactly what we believe, and what your child's days are built on.
This is Why We do ItDecades of research in early childhood confirms that growth stems from safety and trust, unhurried.
True learning requires a foundation of safety and emotional regulation.
True learning starts with connection
We follow a deliberate developmental sequence grounded in early childhood science.
-
Daily outdoor time, gross-motor and sensory experiences so children enter learning ready and raring to go.
-
Low teacher to child ratios mean warm responsive care and restorative guidance.

Child-led inquiry builds problem-solving, creative reasoning, language expression, perspective-taking and executive functioning (working memory, self-control, planning, adaptability etc.)
-
With the first three secure, academic learning flows naturally and sustainably.
Through purposeful play, we sharpen the irreplaceable traits that matter in our ever-evolving world: curiosity, resilience, creativity, resourcefulness, and collaboration.
You don't have to choose between your child's happiness now and their success later.
Wonder Yard Schoolhouse is a play-based preschool in Singapore where children learn because they want to, not because they're made to.
What "play-based" means here
Play isn’t defined by how it looks. We follow the definition used by psychologist Peter Gray: play is self-chosen and self-directed.
So play here isn't only sandpits and dress-up. When a child reaches for a writing worksheet or a book because they're curious and enjoying it, that's play too. Our job isn't to keep children away from letters and numbers, or even worksheets. It's to build a place where they reach for them on their own.
Self-chosen, self-directed
→ PLAY
Assigned and controlled by someone else
→ WORK
What does play look like at Wonder Yard?We don’t promise perfectly behaved children. We promise regulated grownups beside them.
Meltdowns are part of being three. What matters is who's next to your child when they happen.
Our approach: calm coaching, positive reinforcement, and clear boundaries — never shame. Teachers model kindness and composure, not perfection, because teachers are human too. The focus is always character: naming what you feel, fixing what you broke, taking responsibility. Because happiness isn’t pursued; it is built as we grow in character.
And because regulated adults raise regulated children, we support our teachers as carefully as we support your child.

At Wonder Yard Schoolhouse, parents and caregivers are never just spectators stopped at our gates. Families are part of the fabric here, not visitors to it.
